Addressing underachievement, truancy and
exclusion at Key Stages 3 & 4. A handbook for:
- learning mentors
- teachers
- other inclusion workers
- Connexions personal advisers
- youth workers
involved in inclusion programmes at Key Stages 3 and 4:
- in school hours
- out of school hours, including study support
It is based on proven youth work principles which encourage these students to:
- become motivated and committed to improve their school performance
- take responsibility for their activities, their learning, themselves and each other
- develop priority social skills, especially
- self-esteem
- managing feelings
- empathy with others
- values development
- and then other social and life skills
- recognise each other's achievements through peer education and assessment to national standards using the Youth Challenges and the Youth Achievement Awards (managed by UK Youth and accredited by ASDAN), and then
- benefit fully from classroom learning
